Used in the sense of a family by Fries. See Fries, Syst. mycol. 1: xxxviii, xl (1821), where he uses the name Sporodesmia (as 'ordo') based on the genus Sporodesmium Link (= Sporidesmium Link). He attributes the name to Nees von Esenbeck, but a suprageneric name based on Sporodesmium could not be traced, mainly because Nees, Syst. Pilze: 20 (1817), uses the name Sporidermium for Sporidesmium. See Art. 18.2 (Melbourne)
