Martin (Mycologia 37: 527, 1945) attributes the name, ?at class rank, to Sachs, Lehrbuch, originally published in German in 1873, English edition in 1875. Also used by Brefeld, Untersuch. Gesammtgeb. Mykol. 3: 205, 1877, as 'Abtheilung Phycomyceten'
